Casa Tartaruga sits on the edge of Calhau, a small fishing village on the east coast of São Vicente. In front of the house is a beach you will usually have to yourself. Behind it, volcanic mountains. On top, a spacious private roof terrace where the day starts with coffee and ends with the sunset. Mindelo, Cape Verde's music capital, is fifteen minutes away by car.
We rent out the first floor of our house not by the night, but for stays of at least two weeks. People who come here come to stay: to take a sabbatical, to work from the terrace as a digital nomad, to spend the winter in the sun, or simply to slow down to the rhythm of the sea.

Quiet, with the city within reach
Calhau is silent. Mindelo isn't. Shops, markets, cafés and live music are 15 to 20 minutes by car; the international airport is 35 minutes away.

What a fantastic place to completely unwind. The apartment is literally thirty metres from the water, so you constantly hear the soothing sound of the Atlantic Ocean. The sea was calm while we were there, so we could swim in it too. We also enjoyed the fresh fish at restaurant Hamburg. Two weeks was really too short. We will definitely be back.
We spent several wonderful weeks at Casa Tartaruga to escape the European winter. The apartment is very bright, modern and has a comfortable bed. Contact with the owners was smooth and personal. Because you stay here for at least two weeks, you really fall into the calm rhythm of the “no stress” island. A lovely base on São Vicente.
